Another tragedy has befallen the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

The body of a newborn baby was found at the school after a 17-year-old gave birth on Wednesday, South African police said.

Officials could not confirm if the baby had been murdered or died of natural causes, Captain Shado Mashobane said.

“Yes, the girl gave birth to the baby at the school, but we can’t confirm what happened to it. A case of concealment of death is being investigated,” he said.

The 17-year-old girl, who was a pupil on the campus located just outside Johannesburg, was taken to the Midvaal Hospital after bleeding excessively, according to News24.com.

On Friday, Beeld newspaper reported that the baby’s body was found in a plastic bag filled with the girl’s bloodied clothes at the hospital.

In October 2007, school staffer Virginia Makopo was acquitted was accused of physically and sexually abusing students. Last year, before the trial began, Winfrey settled a defamation lawsuit filed by Nomvuyo Mzamane, former headmistress of the academy.
