Gospel singer hopefuls lined up at the Potter’s House in Dallas, TX over the weekend for a chance to compete on “Sunday Best.”

Nearly 1,000 singers spent most of the morning auditioning for the “American Idol”-style show., with some arriving at 11 p.m. Friday.

But not everyone will make the cut, said host Kirk Franklin, a Fort Worth native and Grammy-winning artist.

“You try to say no in a way to encourage people on what they need to work on, on what they need to try different, or if there is another space in serving the Lord they need to pick up, like ushering or church parking lot ministry,” Franklin said.

Stephanie Long drove all the way from Austin and said that making it in the competition would be a dream come true.

“You know, this has been something I have dreamed about all my life,” she said. “I’m a single mom, and my kids are here today, and I’m so proud to be able to show them a godly mother and minister to people through music.”

Former “American Idol” finalist George Huff and Mathew Knowles, megastar Beyonce’s father, were also on hand looking for talent.

Auditions will continue next month in Los Angeles and Atlanta.

The show’s fourth season begins airing in April on BET.
