Sanders, 53, joined the district in 2006 after serving as superintendent in Toledo. His contract requires that the board decide annually whether to give him an extension; if no action is taken, the agreement automatically rolls over for another year.

The original four-year contract was extended once, through 2011. Sanders asked that an extension not be considered the last two years, saying he would wait to be judged when the agreement ran out.

Sanders can walk away from the contract at any time and would be paid for unused vacation time. The board can fire Sanders without cause but would have to pay him a year’s salary.
