Pastor Zachery Tims was found dead in a New York Hotel room on August 12, 2011. The 42 year old pastor was the leader of New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka. The New York City Medical Examiners office is awaiting results of an autopsy. Tims is survived by his ex-wife Riva and their four children.
Tims and his wife, Riva, started New Destiny Christian Center in 1996 in an Orlando hotel room. The congregation grew quickly and in 2001 the church purchased 21 acres in Apopka. Four years later, New Destiny built a $3.4 million, 34,000-square-foot center as a safe place for area youth.
On Monday night, thousands of members attended a special service at New Destiny Christian Center to remember and reflect upon their late pastor. Tims’ ex-wife Riva Tims also spoke, reflecting on the time that Tims spent with his children in Puerto Rico recently.
According to Central Florida News 13, Riva Tims may be among those considered to head the church in the wake of Tims’ death.
“She is one of the people that you can see that there’s a lot of love for her because she helped him build this ministry from where it is. It started with six people and it’s up to over 7,000 people right now, and she was a very key part of that and that’s why people love her still.” said New Destiny Christian Center Executive Director Samuel Anderson.
Until the church finds a permanent pastor, there will be guest speakers, like Bishop T.D. Jakes, who has nationally broadcast television and radio shows.
