1. MISSING MALAYSIA AIRLINES

The known unknowns: The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is going on three weeks now, and there’s been nothing to show for it but condolences.Hopes are dashed almost daily. Always the same story: Objects spotted from the air and from space. And when they’re found, they turn out not to be from the missing plane. Three weeks ago, the last words reported from the cockpit of MH370 set off waves of speculation of sinister intent. Yesterday we learned that too was wrong. The suspicious phrase “Alright, goodnight” was actually the more conventional “Good night Malaysian three seven zero.

2.WASHINGTON LANDSLIDE

Rising toll: The grim death toll from the massive landslide in rural Washington has risen to 24. And the discovery of three more bodies means the list of those confirmed killed likely will rise again soon. The youngest victim was 4 months old; the oldest, 71. There’s another 22 still listed as missing.

3. UKRAINE CRISIS

Pulling back: Ever since Russia annexed Crimea, relations between Moscow and the West have plunged to their worst since the Cold War. It didn’t help that Russia started massing troops on Ukraine’s eastern border. Well, things may be looking up a bit.
