They’re called “day burners:” street lights that burn all day long and all night, 24 hours a day.

Cleveland activist Henry Senyak reports day burners may seem like a harmless issue, but he believes “day burners” waste thousands in tax dollars, and shorten the life of street lights throughout the city.

Senyak told newsnet5.com he believes there are more than 1,000 day burners that can be found in every Cleveland ward, costing tax payers $5,000 to $10,000 every month.

“I’ve counted 18 day burners in an 18-by-6-block area right here off of East 45th in Cleveland,” said Senyak.

Senyak explained these street lights burn all day because of the failure of a $10 sensor that is supposed to shut off the street light when it senses daylight.

Senyak believes street lights that are constantly lit will likely have a shorter life span.
