A recent rash of shootings and deaths involving gun-wielding young people has put pressure on city leaders to respond.
Mayor Frank Jackson unveiled two new programs in a Tuesday afternoon press conference with leaders of the law enforcement community.
The U.S. Attorney’s office announced it will use a program called “V-Grip” that got hundreds of guns off the streets of Youngstown.
It involves federal agents working with and training police.
The idea is to make gun crimes, federal rather than state crimes to have tougher penalties.
“See Something, Say Something” is a program to encourage residents to share information about guns, criminals and crimes with police.
