From weaponry to a reusable substance, hundreds of guns will soon be recycled into steel.

On Thursday, October 20, the City of Cleveland and ArcelorMittal Cleveland will hold a gun melt event to recycle more than 700 guns, including those surrendered in September during the 2011 Mutli-Community Greater Cleveland Gun Buy-Back events.

After a media briefing, the guns will be placed into the Number 1 Basic Oxygen Furnace iron ladle and melted by 200 tons of molten iron at temperatures of about 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit.

The molten iron, along with scrap will then be charged in the basic oxygen furnace to make steel.

The gun melt will commence at 11 a.m. Thursday, across from ArcelorMittal Cleveland’s Gate 1 at 3175 Independence Road.
