We’re seeing progress as several local Catholic churches prepare to reopen.
The Cleveland Diocese closed the churches in 2009 as part of cost-cutting efforts and a reorganization.
Several churches appealed and earlier this year the Vatican ruled in favor of 12 churches. In April, Bishop Richard Lennon announced he would reopen the churches rather than appeal further.
At St. Barbara’s on the west side, workers were busy Tuesday preparing the church. Eleven of the closed church buildings are expected to open by August.
A twelfth church impacted by the Vatican appeal was never physically closed but merged and renamed. The decision by the Bishop means it will be returned to its original parish name
