It’s official. Browns head coach Pat Shurmur named first-round draft pick Brandon Weeden the starting quarterback on Monday.
During a news conference, Shurmur said that Weeden will be the one to lead the Browns and there’s no looking back.
Weeden was the No. 22 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State. While he may be a rookie, the 28-year-old is a former minor league baseball player, drafted out of high school by the New York Yankees.
The second-year coach told the quarterbacks Monday morning about his decision. The battle for the back-up QB spot is between Colt McCoy and Senaca Wallace. McCoy, drafted in the third round in 2010, started and played in eight games in his first season. A concussion at the end of last season had Wallace, who was drafted in 2003 by Seattle, taking snaps.
Cleveland has had 16 different quarterbacks start games since the team came back to the league in 1999.
