The Cleveland Browns vice president of security is urging fans to give themselves a little extra time in coming to games this year. It’s part of the NFL’s new security procedure which requires fans to go through a metal detector.

“It’s part of a two part process,” said Carl Meyer, who has been with the team since 1999 when they came back to Cleveland. “They’ll have a place to put [their] bag if they [have] one,” Meyer continued. “And while [their] bag is being searched …[they’ll] be searched with one of these handheld magnetometers.”

What can you expect? Fans are asked to take all metal objects out of their pockets, like cellphones and keys. Meyer said this will only make the process move faster for everyone.

The NFL has had an evolving process of stadium security since the September 11 terrorist attacks. Meyer said this is part of the leagues “best practices” for stadiums and fan conduct. The NFL has worked with U.S. Office Homeland Security and other agencies and put together their policies based on threat assessments and intelligence.

“I think we should have something like this in place,” said Browns fan John Gaal from Lorain. “I think it’s better then the padding down system. I don’t feel that anyone should be putting their hands on me.”

Another fan, Alana Munro, who goes by the name @dawgpndgirl on Twitter, said as along as it moves the process along she’s fine with it.

“If it get’s me in quicker, then I’m all for it. Last year the lines were pretty bad,” she said.

Speaking of which, the lines will no longer be separated by male and female. Meyer said since they won’t be padding anyone down, there is no need for that anymore.

The Browns play the Eagles in their preseason home opener this Friday.
