Cleveland City Council Monday approved a new law that will force all future city employees to live in Northeast Ohio.

The city’s original residency requirement forced Cleveland workers to live within the city limits. But in 2006, the state legislature voted to prohibit residency requirements, which voided that ordinance.

The new requirement comes after an audit found some firefighters were trading shifts and living out of state for months at a time.

First responders will also be forced to live in Cuyahoga or one of six surrounding counties.

But all current city employees will be grandfathered in and not forced to move closer to the city
