Cleveland schools CEO Eric Gordon will testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions this week.
CEO Gordon will be part of a panel discussing the topic of Safe and Supportive Schools: Lessons from the Field.
Gordon’s testimony will focus on changes the district has made since a 2007 shooting at SuccessTech Academy that has earned Cleveland national recognition for improving school safety.
According to a written relase, Gordon will focus on the Humanware initiative which focuses on addressing the social and emotional needs of students to head off behavioral issues before they get worse. The district says it has seen a 42 percent decline in serious safety incidents since the SuccessTech shooting attributed to the initiative as well as increased security measures including metal detectors, x-rays and surveillance cameras.
“CMSD has a great deal more to do to improve both the safety and support of our students and their academic readiness,” said Gordon. “But I am pleased to share with the Senate Committee examples of the positive changes we’ve seen in student outcomes in the past five years that the district has invested in these conditions for learning.”
