According to the fire department, South Euclid Mayor Georgine Welo told the police and fire departments they needed to trim $350,000 from their budget.
When the goal wasn’t met, a memo came down stating that layoffs would go into effect on June 29. The layoffs would include five firefighters and two police officers.
The city says it comes from funding cuts from the state and county. The city council has been searching for alternatives, but failed to pass a tax rollback by one vote, prompting the layoffs.
Now the council is discussing a possible safety levy, an income tax levy, or charging for garbage removal as a way to bring in more revenue and fend off the department cutbacks.
