The Shaker Heights Council passed an ordinance February 24 to ban the use of cell phones while driving and that law will go into effect Thursday, March 26.
Under the law, drivers cannot use laptops, PDAs or other wireless devices.
Using a cell phone while driving will be a primary offense in Shaker Heights, meaning that a police officer can pull drivers over just for using their phones. A first-degree misdemeanor, it will carry a potential maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Until May 25 drivers pulled over for this offense will receive a warning. After that date police will begin to issue tickets.
