Over 80% of black women deal with fibroids, which are benign (non-cancerous) tumors inside of a woman’s uterus. While there are many different types of treatment options, many women opt for a hysterectomy, or the removal of the uterus.

But what about the women who have fibroids, but still want to have children?

This is just what Gessie Thompson (featured in above image), a brand strategist and fertility coach, was forced to deal with. Diagnosed with fibroids in 2001, hers became a 10-year battle with her body in search of a miraculous happy ending. Now, she’s been featured in Essence magazine, and is sharing words of hope with women enduring fibroid battles of their own.
