The city of Cleveland honored citizens and police officers with an award ceremony in city council chambers Thursday evening.
Dozens of officers, including the department’s Domestic Violence Unit as well as five citizens, were honored.
William Morrison received the Citizen Award Plaque for thwarting a 67-year-old sexual predator’s attempt to lure a 17-year-old autistic girl.
One by one, the details of a police officer’s heroic deeds were read. Among those were Sgt. Paul Baeppler saving a woman from jumping off a bridge and Sgt. Melvin Wilson, stopping a burglary while off duty.
Chief Calvin Williams said he wished he could give awards to all officers for the service they provide the people of Cleveland but especially wanted to thank those who are actively helping to make the city safer.
“Our officers can’t do it by themselves we need the help of the citizens of this great city to keep things safe. You saw demonstrated here tonight citizens do jump in and help and appreciate that,” he said.
