Prosecutors have filed 437 charges against 43 juveniles for their participation in gang-related crimes while being housed in the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center.

The move is described as an unprecedented action by Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty.

On June 10, prosecutors submitted the 437-count complaint against 43 members of the Heartless Felons. The gang was started by juvenile offenders from Cuyahoga County in 2000.

“We began six months ago because after a decade of increasing and unchecked violence in the Detention Center, enough, was enough,” said First Assistant County Prosecutor Duane Deskins, who is also chief of the Juvenile Division.

The complaint includes charges of participating in a criminal gang and racketeering as well as robbery, extortion, assault, theft, kidnapping, menacing, intimidation and vandalism.

All 43 defendants are now in custody.
