1. ISIS

The long haul: The phrase has been repeated so often that it could become a mantra in Washington: It’s going to be a long fight against ISIS. The United States and its coalition partners have been quick with airstrikes, dropping tons of ordnance on ISIS targets. They’re having some effect, experts say, but on the ground, headway against the Islamist extremists won’t come easy. Local forces on the ground have had a tough time combatting ISIS fighters.

2. ERIC HOLDER

Resignation: Attorney General Eric Holder called it quits yesterday after six years at the helm of the Justice Department. He’ll stick around for a bit while a successor is named and confirmed. At a news conference with President Obama, Holder called serving as attorney general the “greatest honor of my professional life.” He is the first African-American to serve in that post.

3. HANNAH GRAHAM

Back to Virginia: Jesse Matthew, a suspect in the disappearance of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, will be sent back to Virginia from Texas as soon as today. He agreed to the extradition. Authorities found Matthew on a Galveston County beach some 1,300 miles from where he’s wanted in Graham’s disappearance. She was last seen in an area of Charlottesville, Virginia, known as the Downtown Mall. Authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.
