The city of Cleveland is seeking city council’s approval to raise rates at its parking meters and public lots. If the bill passes, the price to park per hour at a meter would increase by a quarter.

The price to park per hour at the public lots would go up by at least a dollar. Monthly parkers could see an increase as high as $30.

The city introduced the legislation to a council committee on Monday. If passed, the change could happen later this year or early next year.

“This parking fee increase is one that was long needed, but never done until this year,” said Dan Williams, media relations director for the city of Cleveland.

Williams said the last time the city increased rates of its parking meters was in 1989. The last parking lot increase happened in 2003.

“We felt it was time, unrelated to the traffic camera issue,” added Williams.
