There’s an unprecedented rise in homeless families in Northeast Ohio. The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless reports there are more homeless families than it’s seen in the last 20 years.
Brian Davis, the executive director of the organization writes the problem is “‘unprecedented in Cleveland or Cuyahoga County,’ yes. Even during the 2008-9 financial collapse, recession and housing bubble it was better than 2014.” Davis tells WKYC Channel 3’s Hilary Golston that to deal with full shelters, they are using church basements as overflow shelters to keep homeless families off the streets.
“At least during the downturn, the federal government pumped millions into emergency services to help people get into housing,” Davis wrote. “This last year, we lost shelter beds, we don’t have money to help with rent, and more people are showing up at the front door of the shelters.”
