It is intriguing to witness the tension that exists between clinical counseling and the faith community.

I am keenly aware of how many people in the religious community have negative views of clinical counseling. The discovery that the co-pilot of the fatal Germanwings Flight 9525 had mental health issues, sparked open dialog surrounding this often taboo topic.

This issue is something that exists from the cockpit to the pulpit. The irony of this is that mental health issues continue to escalate within the pew while fewer people are seeking out counseling.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness in 2013, approximately 60 percent of adults and one-half of youths ages 8-15 with a mental illness receive no mental health services within the previous year. Some struggle with the perceptions associated with “needing to get help” or even feel that their “faith” in God is weakened when they do. This is an area that demands our attention considering the impact of the issues that warrant counseling.
