First Lady Michelle Obama is known for her sleek styles and thick, flowing locks.

Though some have assumed her hair is relaxed, FLOTUS’s stylist Johnny Wright says, she has been natural for years.

Mrs. O is not alone. Lots of black women are embracing their natural hair.

“I think a lot of women are starting to see what type of damage chemicals has caused their hair over the years, and they’re really starting to embrace their curls and really embrace the fact that they can be versatile,” Wright told TheRoot.com in an interview.

“They can wear it curly. They can wear it straight. They don’t have to really conform to any particular look. They can do it all…”

Though Mrs. Obama is now embracing her natural texture (Her straight styles are achieved with flat ironing.), it hasn’t always been that way.

In her days of campaigning alongside her husband, then Senator Barack Obama, her hair was chemically treated.

Back in 2008, during the National Democratic Convention, Wright was asked to do the future first lady’s hair and suggested that she wash it.

“She was a little reluctant because she’d just had a relaxer a couple days before,” he said. “I think she knew that I wanted to put my stamp on it. She agreed, a little reluctantly, but she agreed. But I remember the next morning after the speech. The speech was widely popular, but everybody talked about her hair.”
