A group of civil rights leaders, activists and clergy held a news conference Tuesday on the steps of the Justice Center to announce they’ve filed a number of citizens affidavits for probable cause in the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. Tamir was fatally shot on Nov. 22, 2014.

A 911 caller had reported seeing Tamir waving a gun. When officers arrived they pulled up and within seconds shot and killed him. The gun turned out to be a toy gun.Organizers say they are taking actions into their own hands in an effort to hold the officers involved responsible.

“I don’t think these are cruel men and I don’t think they did it on purpose but when you make a mistake you have to be held responsible,” said Pastor R.A. Vernon, The Word Church.

“We are not taking action against police officers, we are taking for the people,” said Dr. Jawanza Colvin, Olivet Baptist Church.

These affidavits, filed in Cleveland Municipal Court, call upon a judge to issue arrest warrants for Cleveland Division of Police officers Frank Garmback and Timothy Loehmann in connection with Rice’s death.
