Volunteers and employees from the Lorain County Habitat for Humanity organization are working 14 hour days to renovate and update 10 apartments for displaced tenants.

In June, Lorain city officials voted to demolish four city motelsbecause of public nuisances and dangerous structures.

The four motels—the Erieview Motel at 2800 W. Erie Ave., the Parkview Motel at 4851 W. Erie Ave., the Shoreway Motel at 3945 W. Erie Ave. and Lake Motel at 3917 W. Erie Ave.—will all be torn down by October 2015.

Residents in those motels told several non-profit agencies in Lorain they would be left homeless if they didn’t get some help.

That’s when the Habitat for Humanity group stepped in.

“We’re a Christian-based mission and we believe every person deserves a decent place to live,” Ralph DeJsus, Lorain County’s Habitat for Humanity Restore manager, said.
