Once you see it up close, you know why the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirdsare always a big attraction at theCleveland National Air Show.

“It’s a blast to fly,” says Captain Alexander Goldfein.

Goldfein is one of six demonstration pilots who takes to the skies in the patriotic F-16 Falcon Jet Fighters. It’s his first year with the Thunderbirds, but he’s been flying for 10 years.

A jet reaches speeds up to 500 mph and flies just feet away from the others. The carefully choreographed, jaw dropping display in the sky includes 40 breathtaking maneuvers and formations.The Cleveland National Air Show takes place Saturday through Monday. The gates at Burke Lakefront Airport open at 9 a.m. but the show starts at 11 a.m. and lasts until about 5 p.m. The Thunderbirds will be the grand finale.
