Cleveland Police officers put their lives on the line to keep us safe. On Wednesday at Cleveland City Hall, top brass honored Cleveland’s top officers for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Officers like partners, Matthew Pollack and John Lyons.

Both received a Medal of Honor for going above and beyond in October 2014 when they approached a man wanted on several warrants.

“He produced a handgun and started shooting at us. We took cover, returned fire and got the job done,” says Pollack.

Officer John Lyons, who was shot in the chest, and saved by his vest during that incident, also went home with a Police Star Award.

“These officers faced an officer’s worst nightmare. Assault by gunfire, and even after taking gunfire the officers stayed calm, fired back and prevented more harm to other officers and citizens. They responded tactically and with restraint catching a violent criminal who was dangerous to others,” said Cleveland Police Commander Ellis Johnson.
