Summer is coming to an end and school is just around the corner. For some, it has already started. What most parents pack their kids’ bags with in preparation for the school year are things such as pencils, lunchboxes, and notebooks.
But the best things can’t be bought, so here are 5 bits of wisdom to implant in your child’s mind.
- Obey authority. Just as the parents are the reigning authorities in the home, the teachers and principal are the reigning authorities of a school. Teach your child to respect and listen to authority figures at school, because (according to Romans 13) all authority is given their status of dominion by God. The only time they are to be opposed is if they do something contrary to your spiritual convictions. As Peter and the apostles said in Acts 5:29 (ESV), “We must obey God rather than men.”
- Be not conformed (Romans 12:2 KJV) Tell your child constantly not to give in to peer pressure. Just because everyone else decides to jump off the bridge, doesn’t mean you should follow suit. Trust me, the free-fall is exhilarating, but it’s the landing that hurts. Remind your kids that doing the wrong thing is only fun until it’s not. Proverbs 10:25 (NIV) says it best; “When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous standfirmforever.”
- Be kind. With so many children taking their own lives or altering their physical appearances to be accepted, it always helps to be kind. Colossians 3:12 (NIV) says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Teach your child to treat others the way they would like to be treated—even if they don’t like the person.
