Abdul Razak Ali Artan was responsible for the violent incident on The Ohio State University’s campus Monday, according to police.

The 18-year-old hit a crowd of pedestrians with a vehicle, police said, before getting out with a knife and stabbing others nearby. He was shot and killed by an OSU police officer.

On the first day of the Fall Semester, Artan appeared in the the Lantern, OSU’s student newspaper. In the article, Artan said the campus is “a huge place,”  and he didn’t know where to practice his Muslim religion. He said he wanted to pray out in the open, but was “afraid of everything going on in the media.”

Police traced the attacker’s 2002 Honda Civic to an apartment building about 10 miles from campus. It’s unclear if he actually owned the vehicle, as well as who lived at the apartment.
