Whitney Houston’s life should have been a triumph. A phenomenal talent with a once-in-a-lifetime voice, Houston became an 80’s musical icon along with other one-named artists like Prince, Michael, Janet and Madonna. She married fellow singer Bobby Brown and the two embarked on what could have been a fairy-tale life.
But it wasn’t. Houston battled with drug abuse, and ended up dead in a California hotel room before she was 50 years old. Her daughter with Brown, Bobbi Kristina Brown, would end up dead under eerily similar circumstances just two years later.

Although her family and Brown didn’t cooperate, director Nick Broomfield was commissioned by Houston during her lifetime to shoot footage of the singer and his is one of the first attempts to put Whitney’s life in context
