Beyoncé has gifted a Bethune-Cookman University student $25,000 to help him pay for college.

Pompano Beach native Demetrius Weaver, 23, was awarded the BeyGood Foundation scholarship. He graduated with honors from B-CU with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2017 and is seeking a master’s degree in criminal justice.

“Winning the BeyGood Foundation scholarship has provided me with the financial resources needed to help me complete my graduate degree at Bethune-Cookman University,” Weaver said. “Furthermore, I thank God for this prestigious recognition and the opportunity to serve as an ambassador for this honor.”

Weaver applied for the BeyGood Foundation scholarship by submitting a 1,000-word essay about an African or African-American leader in his field of study who inspired him. The essay called for applicants to list how they would contribute to history through their own life’s work, a B-CU press release says.

In April, the “Crazy in Love” singer announced she would donate a total of $100,000 to help students at four of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including B-CU. Google then joined the foundation’s efforts, adding four more HBCUs to the list.
