The new law aiming to protect elderly Ohioans from scams and exploitation is set to go into effect Sept. 29.

It adds additional mandated reporters to keep seniors safe. Financial planners, banks, CPA’s and credit unions will be required to report any abuse or unfair treatment to Adult Protective Services.

Before the change, only medical professionals, social workers, police officers and select others were considered mandated reporters.

It is a growing problem in the U.S. Financial abuse costs older Americans more than $2.6 billion per year, according to the National Center on Elder abuse.

If you suspect someone is being exploited financially in Cuyahoga County and they are older than 60, you can call Adult Protective Services at 216-420-6700, to make a report.
