Some key Cleveland leaders believe they’ve identified critical city issues they hope will be the focus of Mayor Frank Jackson’s Oct. 10 State of the City address.

Cleveland council member Michael Polensek told News 5 he believes core issues are public safety, police staffing levels and vacant and condemned homes awaiting demolition.

“We’re seeing neighborhoods at risk today, more than ever before, and you’re hearing that from citizens and businesses,” Polensek said.

Cleveland council member Kevin Conwell believes education and improving the Cleveland Schools is the core issue.

Conwell said the districts graduation rate is up by 22 percent since 2011, but he said the district was given an “F” in its latest state report card.

“In my state of the city, the first thing first is the school system,” said Conwell.
