Walk into a high school bathroom and you may just smell a fruit blend in the air. But it’s not from an air freshener.

It’s coming from vaping devices or e-cigarettes that can easily be disguised. Inside those devices, you can find a liquid mix of flavors and nicotine.

“Tobacco companies have been trying to sneak flavors into their nicotine delivery system for years and years and years and this is an excellent way to do that,” said Dr. Stephen Sondike, division director of adolescent medicine of Akron Children’s Hospital.

To put it into perspective, one vaping pod can contain as much nicotine as a full pack of traditional cigarettes. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports less kids are smoking traditional cigarettes, the number is increasing as it relates to e-cigarette use among middle and high school students. In 2017, nearly 12 out of every 100 high school students reported that they used it at least once in the last 30 days, according to the CDC.

On Sept. 12, the Food and Drug Administration called the vaping trend among young kids an “epidemic”and asked e-cigarette manufactures to submit a plan on how they plan to address and fight against the youth using vaping products.
