During Monday’s City Council new legislation that would make rental scooters and electric bikes legal was introduced.
The new law would add the electronic sources of transportation to existing bike laws.
Aimed at hourly rentals, vendors would be required to pay the city one dollar per scooter or bike per day. The money acquired would go to a new transportation infrastructure fund, which would pay for bike lanes and other things for mobility devices.
If approved, the would have to adhere to the following regulations:
- A person operating a mobility device is prohibited on any street with a speed limit over 35.
- No person operating a mobility device shall exceed a speed greater than 15 miles per hour.
- No person shall park a mobility device on a sidewalk in such a manner that interferes with pedestrian flow.
- All mobility devices must be parked in an upright position.
The new legislation comes after the company BIRD made approximately 100 electric scooters available in the city last August. The city prohibited the scooter because the company did not obtain a permit.
