The Harriet Tubman $20 bill redesign was supposed to be unveiled in 2020, to mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote. But on Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin stated the bill would not be unveiled until 2028, according to The Tennessean.
During a hearing before the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., questioned Mnuchin about the progress of the bill—only to be met with what sounded like an excuse to further deny Harriet Tubman the honor.
“The primary reason we have looked at redesigning the currency is for counterfeiting issues,” Mnuchin said. “Based upon this, the $20 bill will now not come out until 2028. The $10 bill and the $50 bill will come out with new features beforehand.”
So, the $10 and $50 bills are the ones with the counterfeiting issues – so, therefore, they get priority? Or is the $20 bill only being put on the back burner because Donald Trump slammed the idea of it in 2016, calling it “pure political correctness?”
