Domestic Violence affects men and women all over the world.  We hear disturbing accounts of individuals violating another person and losing control of their emotions over numerous senseless reasons.  Why?

This month we highlight Domestic Violence Awareness.  Started in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence who intended to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women, and their children.  Many organizations are involved in the campaign to create non-violent respectable relationships between people.  The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) is committed to ensuring all Americans especially those at risk for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).  The four types of violence that IPV is considered are physical violence, sexual violence, emotional abuse and threats of physical and sexual violence.  The key to prevention is focusing on the first time someone hurts a partner (called first-time perpetration). All forms of IPV are preventable.  Knowledge about the factors that prevent IPV is lacking.  CDC and other organization are continuing to strive to better understand the developmental pathways and social circumstances that lead to this type of violence.
