Shanquella Robinson, who died in Cabo, Mexico

It’s been nearly three months since Shanquella Robinson’s tragic death in Cabo, and many questions remained unanswered.

The investigation has been painfully slow. Relatives close to the North Carolina native are beginning to wonder if authorities will do anything to seek justice for her untimely passing.

“I’m just trying to wait for somebody to be arrested. The FBI is not telling anything,” Robinson’s mother Salamondra told The Independent back in December 2022.

Authorities gave their last update about the case in January

Baja California Sur Attorney General Daniel de la Rosa Anaya gave his last update in January, stating at a press conference, that there was “no impunity” in the mysterious case. Anaya said that he and his team were working diligently with U.S. officials to interview everyone that was involved in Robinson’s Oct. 29 murder.

“It is important to obtain the court order with regard to whoever is responsible for this, but also if there were any accomplices,” he said at the time, according to WSOC-TV.

An arrest warrant for the “aggressor” filmed brutally beating Shanquella on camera was issued, but as of now, no arrests have been made.

“This case is fully clarified, we even have a court order, there is an arrest warrant issued for the crime of femicide to the detriment of the victim and against an alleged perpetrator, a friend of hers who is the direct aggressor,” Anaya said before, adding:

“We are carrying out all the pertinent procedures such as the Interpol alert and the request for extradition to the United States of America.”

The FBI echoed a similar statement, noting that the investigation was still ongoing and that the department was conducting “a thorough review” of the case.

Insiders believe that red tape could be to blame for Robinson’s slow investigation. Extradition trials can take months to process, especially when a U.S. citizens kill another U.S. citizen on foreign soil. The U.S. Department of Justice will need to approve the murder charge in consultation with the Secretary of State before an official conviction can be made.

But could this process be expedited given the severity of the case? Especially if more media coverage were given? Many people seem to think so.

Social media users demand more coverage of Robinson’s case

Online, social media users are calling out the media and officials for their lack of coverage and diligence in Shaquella Robinson’s murder investigation. Several users were upset that there has been persistent coverage of Gabby Petito’s murder investigation, but little to none regarding Robinson’s case.

“Are there any updates on the #ShanquellaRobinson case?” wrote one Twitter goer. “I don’t like how quiet it has gotten. I had to hear about Gabby Petito every damn day.”

Another user chimed in: “Twitter & the media continue to trend #GabbyPetito. Yet we cannot get trending or a story on the murder of Shanquella Robinson…I’m sorry for Gabby & her family, but her case was resolved. Shanquella’s case is being ignored by U.S. officials.”

The FBI has uncovered new information about the mysterious death of Gabby Petito.

The media and FBI have delivered several updates about the death of Gabby Petito since she went missing in September 2021. In fact, due to the onslaught of media attention and the FBI’s persistence, Petito’s remains were quickly discovered at Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National just days after she was reported missing.

Earlier this month, officials uncovered a photo of Petito that showed her just weeks before her death with facial injuries. Reports say Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, were stopped by police investigating a domestic disturbance call around the same time, according to CNN.

The new information has been stirring conversations about the chilling phenomenon of “missing white woman syndrome,” or the public and media’s tendency to focus on missing white female victims in favor of those of color.
It’s tough to believe that the media could be ignoring Robinson’s case but it certainly feels like it.

What happened to Shanquella Robinson?

Robinson was with several “friends” when she died on Oct. 29  in her villa at the upscale Fundadores Beach Club in San José del Cabo. Initially, her travel mates told her mother Salamondra that she had died of alcohol poisoning, but a death certificate later revealed that the young entrepreneur died from a “severe spinal cord injury and atlas luxation,” an instability of neck vertebrae.

Around the same time, a video of Shanquella being viciously beaten by one of her “friends” also surfaced. Authorities have since ruled her death as femicide.

Shockingly, some of the people that traveled to Cabo with Shanquella have since visited the family.

“These people looked me in the face and told me there was no fight in Cabo,” Salamondra added to The Washington Post. “They’re on the run.”

Shanquella’s father, Bernard Robinson, is also desperate to find answers about his daughter’s tragic death. He told the publication that he has been “a wreck” throughout the slow investigation.

“There’s a whole lot of unanswered questions in my mind about her death,” he said while holding back tears. “I just want justice for my daughter.”
