Tennis star Serena Williams (pictured) thanks her fans for their prayers in light of her emergency hospitalization this week for a blood clot in her lung and a hematoma (pooling of blood under the skin) and said her return to the tennis court will take a back seat to getting healthy:
“While I can’t make any promises now on my return [to tennis], I hope to be back by early summer,” Williams said in a statement. “That said, my main goal is to make sure I get there safely.”
The sports world was stunned with the news early Wednesday that Williams left the red carpet at a celebrity gala Sunday for the Oscars and checked in to a Los Angeles hospital for emergency treatment.
Williams was treated first for the blood clot and later needed emergency medical attention for the hematoma.
