Let’s get one thing clear: No matter which church you go to, at some point some woman will sashay through the sanctuary with her hips, her thighs, or her Double-Ds on display. This is neither exclusive to teens and twenty-somethings, nor to those new to the faith.

In this age of fashionable “skinny” jeans, low-cut blouses, and fitted sheath dresses, the seasoned saint quoting Scripture verbatim may be the very one rocking a too-mini skirt to praise team practice.

These, my dear sisters, are the facts.

The question is: What should we do about them—if anything?

The subject is touchy and likely has been since the proverbial church doors opened. Some women get really angry about this, accusing their spiritual sisters of trying to seduce their husbands or the pastor. The offenders, meanwhile, may get defensive if told about their questionable dress, accusing others of being old fashioned or just plain jealous.

The debate would be much simpler if God gave us all a standard dress code, but He doesn’t. The Bible verse often quoted to deal with the matter isn’t specific: “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety…” (I Timothy 2:9).

What’s “modest” in one woman’s view is totally different from another’s. Even if we announced over a worldwide PA system that all believers must wear knee-length dresses to church, it wouldn’t solve the issue. Somebody somewhere would miss the announcement because she was in the bathroom putting on her makeup or in front of the mirror making sure her backside looked good in those jeans.

Besides, Christians who see nothing wrong with skirts an inch or two above the knee would protest. Not to mention the old-school saints who say a dress must fall below the knee, no higher than mid-calf.
