In the world of gospel music, there’s typically a healthy mix of both new and veteran artists offering projects to keep the soul inspired. 2013 should be no exception.

Artists like Michelle Williams  and Jonathan Nelson, with a couple of albums under their belts, are returning with a new sound.

“This new project is so unlike anything you’ve heard from [Williams] before,” says Phil Thornton, VP of marketing & brand development for Light Records of the former Destiny’s Child member’s album.

“Vocally, she’s at her best. Lyrically, it’s just so great and fresh, but it’s definitely inspirational. I hope it’s going to inspire people across the world. It’s a great project.”

“I want people to walk away with the message of love – God’s unconditional love for us,” says Williams, who will also serve as a celebrity judge this year in gmc’s Most Powerful Voices contest. “I want them to know that when you accept God’s love, know who you are in Him, you’re unstoppable.”

Her album is set for an early 2013 release, while Nelson is expected to offer his fans a new project in April.

Stars on the Rise

At the forefront of those promising to deliver great things this year is Atlanta-based singer Tasha Cobbs. Her remake of the Jesus Culture hit, “Break Every Chain” thrust her into the gospel spotlight. Released as a digital single at the end of November, her rendition was the #1 most downloaded Christian song for the week ending 12/9, and at press, occupied a top spot on Soundscan with no radio play.

Cobbs says that when she first heard the original song, she kept it on repeat for days.

“I taught it to my praise team at my church,” the Georgia-native recalls, “and when I ministered that first time, it felt like mine.”

The song’s success might have caught the industry by surprise, but not Cobbs.

“It doesn’t really matter who is singing it,” she says, “the song has its own life. It’s one of those songs that has its own anointing. So it doesn’t surprise me the way it affects people.”

Growing up in a family with a talent for music, no one in her family thought she’d be the one to become a singer. She’d always been the one directing the choir, not leading it.
