The topic of proper dress code at place of worship has caused fierce debates, not only in current times, but also in the early church. Many say that times have changed and people have to adopt new dress codes that conform to the current trends in fashion and design. This belief has been challenged by a section of church members who are conservative and insist that the word of God is absolute. The bible gives a clear guideline on how men and women should adorn in the house of worship.

Men

So how exactly should men dress in church? Well to a large extent, it greatly depends on your church leadership. Many churches adopt the norms of the contemporary society around; some are strict and follow a strict church manual; others have church uniforms. The bible is very categorical that men should not wear clothes made of wool and linen; according to Deut 22:9-11 and Leviticus 19:19. This is also a subject of discussion as the Gospel liberates Christians from such rules in Romans 8:1-2 ‘’ there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set youfree in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death,’’ Paul teaches that any man who prays or prophesies with something on his head, disgraces his head. That makes it clear that men should not cover their heads at place of worship.

Women

The bible is more precise concerning women’s dressing at places of worship than it is about men. Concerning covering the head, the bible says ‘’ For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or to be shaved, she should wear a veil.’’ Women should not expose their body parts, as it will attract attention and distract worship. Leviticus directs that women should not put on men’s clothing.
