The University of Akron announced Wednesday that it will refund an estimated $4.1 million to students.
In June 2015, the university adopted a new plan to resolve a “$60 million fiscal challenge” in the university’s annual budget.
The plan included $10 million of fee increases, which increased the facilities fee that students on the main campus pay.
As a result, students paid $28.50 per credit hour instead of the previous amount of $18.55 per credit hour.
But the facility fee is a “general fee” that should have been subjected to a fee cap enacted last year, according to state officials.
