During the conversation, Dr. O’Neal shared that the book is a refresh of her earlier memoir, Walk Like You Have Somewhere to Go, which was first published in 2010. “People still want to hear my story,” she explained, adding that Harper Collins approached her to re-release her story with new insights. She refers to the memoir as her “testimony,” rather than simply a book, emphasizing the deeper message of faith and perseverance within its pages.

Throughout the interview, Dr. O’Neal reflected on the challenges she faced, including teenage pregnancy and family struggles with addiction. She credited her faith, particularly lessons from her mother and her foundation in the Church of God in Christ, for guiding her through these difficult moments. A key scripture that shaped her life, Proverbs 3:5-6, continues to inspire her: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart… and He shall direct your paths.”
Dr. O’Neal also encouraged listeners not to give up on their dreams, sharing her own story of returning to school in her forties to pursue higher education after raising her family. “Your time will come if you are determined,” she said. She acknowledged the importance of persistence, reminding others that “you have to put in the work” and that it’s never too late to chase a dream.
