Cleveland City Council approved legislation to place the raise of minimum wage to $15 on the May 2017 ballot.

The legislation was approved under emergency on first reading Monday.

The measure would appear on the May 2, 2017 ballot and, if approved, would take effect the following January.

The proposal, submitted by the Service Employees International Union, would raise Cleveland’s minimum wage to $12 an hour, followed by an annual $1 increase over three years to $15.

Council voted down a previous proposal to increase minimum wage back in  August.
